I got this brilliant idea in my head that I wanted to make Mariah's birthday cake this year. Since she loves The Fault In Our Stars, it would only be logical that would be the cake's theme. Now, I love messing around with polymer clay. After browsing around on Pinterest and Googling how to work with fondant (something I have NEVER done before!), I figured it couldn't be much different than working with the clay. Yeah, I don't care what those tutorials tell you, it is different! Rolling out that fondant and shaping it was such a pain in the ass, by the end I wanted to chuck the whole ball of it out the window. The fault doesn't lie in the stars. It lies in my inability to cake decorate.
Since I had already committed to making the cake, wasted too much time in trying to figure out what I was doing, she got it served to her on her birthday anyway. I think she was probably trying to be nice when she said she liked it ;)
I swore- never again! Of course, Allison loved it and demanded a Frozen themed cake for her birthday. I hope she forgets by December!
Excellent work!! I've never made fondant figurines before but can imagine how tedious it'll be. Would love to see a Frozen cake too. Lil Pumpkin would go mad!! Haha
ReplyDeleteAwww, that came out AWESOME! I can only imagine how much work that was, but you should be very proud!
ReplyDeleteNow that is a cute Birthday cake! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know why you don't like it, that cake is c.u.t.e!! You must be too close to it, and still mad at the fondant to see how cute it is. Maybe you'll have recovered by Dec. when it's time to make the Frozen cake, hahaha
ReplyDeleteCause they are 2 pudgy rollie polies with no necks, and the cigarettes look like some sticks with red ends lol. Oh well, maybe I'll find a detailed Frozen tutorial before December rolls around.
Deletesuch delight! You should've entered the competition my friend, who is publishing FAULT IN OUR STARS in my country, is organizing - people send things they made inspired by the book for a chance to win something
ReplyDeleteI didn't know there was a contest. Do you have the link? I would love to see what everyone submitted!
DeleteI will link you up over at Facebook if I find it :)
Deletehaha very artistic at your sea. But must have taken a lot of work indeed, good luck with the Frozen one, bet she won't forget
ReplyDeletenever heard of the book or movie until now, but very creative
ReplyDeleteYou did an excellent job
ReplyDeleteMy daughter makes fondant cakes for special occasions so I know how much WORK you put into this cake. But honestly it was worth it, the cake looks Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI really admire those that can make such lovely cakes. I never realized just how hard it was until I tried it myself. Now I know why they can cost quite a bit!
DeleteI think you are beating yourself up. It turned out GREAT!!! My Granddaughter turned 21 and her older sister made her a drunken Barbie cake.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks great, too. I consider myself to be somewhat crafty, but I've never attempted to do anything more than a basic cake. Luckily my sister who lives in North Dakota now likes to make and decorate cakes so she always does Elliott's birthday cakes.
ReplyDeleteI think it turned out great!
ReplyDeleteI've had times where I've wanted to chuck something I've made out the window. My husband laughs at me because I curse the whole time I'm making whatever it is I'm making. I insist I have to make it though.
AWESOME job Theresa!!! That cake looks bought, and I am looking forward to seeing that movie! It gets great reviews!
ReplyDeleteYes, wonderful, funny photo, which pretty cake!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you made that! I mean, I can, because you're very artsy. It's just so good, detailed, fun and professional looking! Bravo! Enjoy an extra piece for me, Theresa.
ReplyDeleteI think it turned out fine. And, I gotta say, it's definitely original!
ReplyDeletewooow...I never thought I will see the fault in our star cake! Lovely...I can imagine all the works you have to pour on that cake :)...
ReplyDeleteI think look really cute Theresa I remember I made some cakes like this to my kids
ReplyDeleteCute!
Oh, I love it! I think it's super fun.
