Grinch-Nog (Kid Friendly Egg Nog)

Watching Christmas movies with the family is one of my favorite activities to do this time of the year. Now that our oldest daughter is home from college for the holidays, we are in full holiday movie watching mode. We have a hefty list of films we try to squeeze in every year, and while we don't always get through them all, we do make sure we at least get the classics in. One of our all-time favorites is How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Really though, don't we all love that film? It's one that has stood the test of time, winning over new audiences with each passing generation.

Of course, we can't fully appreciate the holiday movie watching experience without throwing in some tasty Christmas treats, right? Every year, Jason settles in with a big old glass of eggnog while the girls scrunch up their noses at his treat of choice. A drink with raw eggs and alcohol? Yeah, no thanks.

This year I thought I'd search for a kid friendly eggnog recipe to see if we could get them to change their minds on the holiday beverage. I searched high and low and finally came across an eggnog recipe in my Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book. The recipe called for the eggs to be cooked and had instructions for leaving out the alcohol. I decided to take it one step further and tossed in some green food coloring and called it "GrinchNog". A classic holiday eggnog to watch with a classic holiday film.

Egg Nog

I dipped the rims of the glasses into white icing, then ran the icing coated rims through some green sprinkles to give it a little extra grinchy flare. The end result? The girls loved it!
Yield: Serves 4

Grinch-Nog (Kid Friendly Egg Nog)

INGREDIENTS:

      • 6 beaten egg yolks
      • 2 ½ cups milk
      • 1/3 cup sugar
      • 1 tsp vanilla
      • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
      • 2 tbsp sugar
      • green food coloring (optional)
      • nutmeg and green sugar sprinkles for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS:

      1. In a heavy saucepan, mix the egg yolks, milk, and 1/3 cup of sugar. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture just coats a metal spoon. Remove from heat. Place the pan in a bowl of ice water and stir for 2 minutes. Cover and chill for 4 to 24 hours.
      2. Just before serving, beat the cream and 2 tablespoons of sugar until soft peaks form. If desired, stir in several drops of green food coloring. Transfer chilled egg mixture to a punch bowl. Fold in the whipped cream mixture. Sprinkle the tops with nutmeg and green sugar sprinkles. Serve immediately.

  1. I'd never try it myself since the mixture of eggs and milk which is supposed to be drunk just seems nasty to me :) but it does look so gorgeous, you know I'd glue my eyes to those green glasses :) And what beautiful green sparkles!

Not sure I have a fave Christmas movie, but I did save festive episode of Will and Grace for this weekend :) and next week I will be downloading all the new festive series from BBC from Miniaturist and Little Women to Victoria Christmas Special from ITV :)

    1. This is the first egg nog that I've had because the egg/milk combo never appealed to me either. But since this cooked the two together and added in sweetness, I actually thought it was borderline milkshake good.

How is Will and Grace going for you? I thought you weren't going to be catching the reboot.

    2. I'm watching it for Karen, she's crazy as ever if not more since she's obsessed with Trump and keeps rubbing it to Grace's face :)

    3. I never watched the original Will & Grace, but my mom loved it. If I can ever get caught up on shows, I definitely want to see it some day. Karen does sound like a riot.

    4. you and Jason first need to start Mike and Molly as I think you'd love that one after Last Man Standing!

    5. That is on the ever growing list. We did watch a few episodes when it first aired, but somehow lost track and started watching something else. We'll definitely revisit that series at some point.

  2. Oh man - I can't list just one. Christmas Vacation, Elf, Deck the Halls, Christmas with the Kranks, A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street, Scrooged, Home Alone 1 & 2, Holiday in Handcuffs, The Holiday, Polar Express, Jingle All The Way, The Santa Claus, Grinch, A Christmas Story and I'm a sucker for the Hallmark Movies!

    1. We love all of those too, though I forgot about Christmas with the Kranks. I'm going to have to see if we can squeeze that one in this year. I haven't done the Hallmark movies in years, but have recently been catching up on a few sappy Hallmark type Christmas shows on Netflix this past week. I've been getting sucked into them too lol

    1. I'm on the side of people wondering why Die Hard is a Christmas movie. I know it's a heated debate, but I just don't get it hahaha
