There are just some summertime traditions that never go out of style, whether it's jumping through the sprinkler, staying up late to chase fireflies, going to the drive-in movie theater, or skipping rocks across the lake. These are all activities that I loved participating in when I was a little girl, and it warms my heart every time my own kids are making their own memories by participating in them too. These are memories that will be passed down to their own children, I'm sure, because some things are just too special no matter how much time goes by.
One of my favorite family memories from my childhood was when my parents would take us to dinner at the drive-in diner. Eating away from home was a privilege that we only got a few times a year, so when it did happen it was a real treat! It was so fun to watch the waitress hook our tray of burgers and hotdogs to the car window, then we would have a good old fashioned sit down family meal right in our car. Good times! The real treat always came at the end of the meal though, when dad would have the waitress bring us out huge frosty mugs of A&W Root Beer Floats as an extra special surprise.
The A&W Original Root Beer Float includes 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream in your favorite frosty mug, then filled to the brim with delicious A&W Root Beer. There's something almost magical about the vanilla ice cream flavor mixed with the root beer that just makes the taste buds sing and dance. And those vanilla flavored fizzy bubbles that always surround the top of the mug? That's the stuff sweet dreams are made of.
While we no longer have those old fashioned drive-in diners near us, I do like to recreate a drive-in style meal for my family a few times each summer, complete with hot dogs served with frosty mugs of A&W Root Beer Floats to wash it all down.
My family loves these treat meals just as much as I did when I was a child, so I am glad I am able to pass down another time honored summer tradition for them to enjoy for many more years to come.
Did you know that today, August 6, is National Root Beer Float Day? I had no idea such a day existed until recently, but now that I know that it does, it will forever be marked on my calendar to celebrate each year. Any excuse to enjoy a root beer float is a good excuse to me! Now, you could make the A&W Original Root Beer Float to celebrate the day, or you could do like us and try a new root beer float creation.
We just whipped up this Brownie Sundae Root Beer Float made with Original Flavor A&W Root Beer and it was Ah-Mazing! Simply crumble a brownie and place it in the bottom of a mug, reserving a tablespoon or so for topping. Squirt a little hot fudge sundae topping over the brownie, top with 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, then fill the remainder of the mug with A&W Root Beer. Finish it off with a swirl of whipped cream, spoon on the remainder of the brownie crumbs and some decorative candy sprinkles, top with a cherry, then enjoy! Nom, Nom!
If that doesn't sound like your cuppa tea (or cuppa float), check out A&W Root Beer's Instagram page for more root beer float recipe ideas. There's a salted caramel one on there that's begging for me to make it real soon! Original or new creation, no matter what kind of root beer float you whip up, be sure to snap a pic before you sip and tag your pics on social media with #AWRootBeer. I can't wait to see your creations today!
Did you ever enjoy getting root beer floats from the drive-in diner?
Being able to pass down traditions that they will enjoy with their kids is grand indeed. I don't think I've ever even tried one, surprise lol, no drive in places around here at all.
ReplyDeleteOf course you haven't tried one. Just sit over there and eat your chicken.
DeleteI've never actually understood what root beer is, is like a non-alcoholic beer for kids? Or like Russian kvass? Some of our breweries make kvass with plum, raspberry, lemon aromas and we have a couple of foreign fruit flavoured ciders (Sommersby for example with pear, apple) but I've never tried them as they have some alcohol in them. We don't have drive ins either, but then again I think only half of population owns a car, maybe even less.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a beer. It's just soda made from the root of the sassafras. We do have flavored alcoholic beers here though. I don't drink, but I am hooked on this blueberry beer that we have. It's about the only one I'll agree to sitting down and having a beer with Jason.
DeleteSassawhats? That could be my new fave word, although faffing has been my fave so far this year :)
DeleteI haven't had a root beer float in years, but now I HAVE to have one today. And of course using A&W!!!
ReplyDeleteGirl, you need to remedy that asap!
DeleteI've made them at home. When my daughter was younger this was her favorite thing to ask for for dessert.
ReplyDeleteWe're opposite. My daughter hated the when she was around 8is. Now, she can't get enough.
DeleteI was never a root beer fan
ReplyDeleteI bet Daisy is though!
DeleteAaaw.. love it! Since a kid I love this traditiona float, having vanilla ice cream smearked over my face :). And now my kids love it too! Happy National root Beer Float day..
ReplyDeleteHappy National Root Beer Float Day to you too, Indah! Hope you are readjusting well back into life in Indonesia!
DeleteWe made these at home and sometimes got them from our local Sonic. I'd forgotten about them and now I need one! :)
ReplyDeleteI've never tried Sonic's root beer floats. If they are made with A&W, I must get one next time I'm there!
DeleteYum! A&W root beer is my absolute favourite! I haven’t made a float in so long though I think I’ll have to pick some up and make them for the kiddos! - jeanine
ReplyDeleteI hope you and the kids enjoy your floats!
DeleteI admit, I have never been to a drive in. I have enjoyed a homemade root beer float & know A&W makes the best!
ReplyDeleteIt's been too many years since I've been to one. I wish we had more locally.
DeleteOk so I grew up with A&W down the street from me, and this brings back so many memories. I love Rooter Floats!
ReplyDeleteIt would have been heaven to have A&W down the street growing up. I know where all of my allowance money would have went ;)
DeleteThese looks wonderful Theresa! hughs!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Gloria!
DeleteI did know it was National Rootbeer Float Day, and I did celebrate with an A&W Float. I saw that brownie recipe on their site too, and want to make it. It looks so good. There's a campfire one calling my name as well (roasted marshmallows with that float? Yes, please). :) Happy RBF Day!!
ReplyDeleteThe brownie one had Jason going nuts! It was a total mind blown event for him. He was running around saying to anyone who would listen "Hey, ya'll ever put brownie in your root beer float? It's AMAZING! lol
DeleteOh I love a&ws root beer floats. It’s been far too long since I’ve had one of these delightful little treats
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, so much YES! I like my ice cream to stay as is, my husband likes it stirred in.
ReplyDeleteI have never stirred mine in. I think I'd like mine to just stay as is too. Then, you still get a chunk of ice cream mixed in here and there :)
DeleteI can remember a place that we loved to go 40+ years ago that had the mugs. But it was a inside place no car hop service. We played the jukebox on the wall of the table and ate and drank good. Have not had rootbeer in years
ReplyDeleteThe mugs are one of the best parts! I think even without the carhop service, it probably would have been just as fun. Simple times that I wish we still lived in.
DeleteI've never been a root beer fan. My son, however, is another story. I don't know if he's ever tried a root beer float.
ReplyDeleteYou should let him try one! My daughter didn't like them when she was little, but can't get enough now!
