$100 Bathroom Fix

We completely gutted the kid's bathroom and redid the whole thing about 3 years ago. I was really loving the results until I noticed my kids love to use the wall as a brace when getting out of the tub. Even though we used a gloss bathroom paint, ugly water streaks were popping up on the paint.

I love home renovation. The planning, the demo, even the scent of construction makes me really happy. What I do NOT like to do, is paint. Painting sucks! I knew that if I repainted the bathroom, I was going to have to do it all over again in another 3 years. Something I was completely not looking forward to! So, it came down to the best solution. Slapping up some vinyl wainscoting.

It went from this:

To This:

I wasn't sure if I was going to like it at first, but now that it's up, I think with the extra white, it really brightens the room up more. For only $100, I get to avoid repainting the bathroom again! Money well spent.

*Do you do your own home renovations, or do you prefer to pay someone to do them for you?

  1. Oooh, I do like the true blue :) And you know I already like the backsplash in your tub. I'd maybe add a white plaster border between the walls and the ceiling.

    1. You know Dezzy, I did think about putting moulding at the ceiling, but my husband did it all in our previous home and it was a real pia getting those cuts right. I'm confident he could do it and make it look great, but the hissy fits he throws when he is doing it just isn't worth it lol. Maybe when we run out of other projects to do around the house, I'll see about adding it in then.

    2. it's true, you need a kind of a ruler for cutting those perfect angles. Maybe a help from a neighbour who knows how to do it? :) There are those cheep cardboard and foam borders which can be cut with a scalpel or even knife. I've put those in the halls of my Imperial palace :)... not by myself naturally :)

  3. Very cool! Ads a nice classy look! And we like to think we can do things around the house ourselves...normally we get about halfway through and call someone out to come finish what we messed up LOL

  8. I like your bathroom renovation, it makes it look bigger too!

I like to hire out because neither my husband or myself are very handy (my oldest can do most anything like that wonderfully well, which is a miracle considering). We've been burnt though, with an exterior paint job of the house, so I sure wish I was good at it.

  9. I definitely would rather have anyone but me do renovations! I am truly a klutz--I once paonted a bathroom-------lets just say oops---and painted cabinets in my kitchen---double oops!!

  11. Love your walls! It looked great before but I really love it now. That tile in your tub is gorgeous! How lucky to have two bathrooms. We had one for years and I have to say life is not pretty when three of you have the Norovirus...enough said Anyways, I have never heard of vinyl wainscoting and I practically live at the building store. I will have to check this out!

  12. Looks good to me. Except with white, their little fingerprints will get on it.

  13. I think it looks great! We have that kind of 1/2 wall look in our kitchen, just where the table sits.

I'd like to switch with you. I'll paint if you rip apart and rebuild. :) I totally get into faux painting, flat painting, paint stripes and more.

  14. the bathroom in my house was completely renovated about 7 or 8 years ago. Down to the concrete floor to wooden walls. My dog hates baths, so I took her in there and she was still nervous to be in the room even though there was no bathtub.

    1. Awww, poor pup. I've always found it weird, but every dog I have ever owned gets really excited about baths. Well, except our pug, but she really isn't the brightest berry in the bunch either.

  15. Great idea! In Singapore, we usually get contractors to do any renovations, although I think a lot of folks overseas like to DIY? Guess because it's cheap plus you don't have to get extra tools to do them on your own :P
