Live Young, Skate On!

Sometimes all it takes is a child's birthday party to bring out the kid in you. Since Allison's birthday falls the week before Christmas, planning a party where all of her friends could attend just wasn't in the cards this year. We ended up waiting almost a month after to throw her a birthday party, and she decided instead of doing it at home this year, she wanted to have it at the roller rink. A-OK in my book! Saves me from all the prep and cleanup. But then again, it also meant peer pressure into donning a pair of roller skates myself and joining in the party.

I really didn't want to, but my mom, who will be 60 soon, and Mariah, who has sworn she would NEVER skate again got out there,  I couldn't be the only bump on a log.

They stuck to the wall all day, but they got out there!

By the end, we skated 2 hours away, and I am proud to say, I didn't fall once :)

When is the last time you have put on a pair of roller skates?

  2. The last time I put skates on is when I was in college. I didn't want to though. I put this on Robin's FB page when she posted her boy's in skates: When I was in 6th grade my Dad took us roller skating for a party his school was having (he was a teacher). A student of his tripped, and fell into him. He swore she pushed him, but why would anyone do that? He landed on both of his elbows, and broke them both. Instead of calling someone to come get us, he insisted on driving home. I helped him make the turns, while he shouted out cuss words out. I'm pretty sure he was cussing because it hurt so much, but I felt like he was cussing at me. Since then I've never wanted to go roller skating. I know it's a little chance for something like that to happen again. But it's a memory none the less. He spent awhile in 2 slings. We had to do all kinds of things for him. He painted a whole picture for my Grandpa with a paintbrush in his mouth that year. When students complain about not being able to do this or that because this or that hurts I think about my Dad painting with his mouth. Then I have no sympathy.

I don't mean to be a downer. At one time I loved roller skating! I remember roller skating to Cindi Lauper, Madonna, and Van Halen. Many of my grade school friends had fun parties at the skateland. We had Little Debbie snake cakes for the cake.

I'm glad she got to have a birthday with her friends.

    1. Ouch! I feel so bad for you dad having that happen to him, but it's also inspiring how he was able to paint a portrait by finding other means to accomplish it and not letting the use of his arms slow him down! Your dad sounds like an amazing man!

    2. Wow. I am so sorry about what happened to your dad. That must of been rough.

  3. We took the kids roller skating last weekend, but I didn't skate. I am in an aircast at the moment, so I couldn't go. They are dying to go back and once my injury is better in about 2 months, I am SOOO getting out there with the kids.

    1. Don't they!? My best friend has a son, 4 months older than Mariah, and we always swore they would get married. He was at the party so we were giving Luke (the bf) a hard time saying he was ruining all of our plans. All in good fun though ;)

    1. Nothing wrong with a little wall hugging. As long as you make the effort, then it's all good :)

  17. I went roller skating once and I don't think my knees have ever recovered. Now ice skating... I did that for the first time much later on when I was a lot more stubborn. My friends kept telling me to grab one of the frames they had for assistance, at least until I could learn to balance a bit better. I refused and kept trying, and by the end of the session I had worked my way up to the big-boy rink. My friends were reluctantly impressed.

  18. Skating is so much fun, I used to do it a lot growing up. I'm pretty sure I would fall on my face trying at my age now, but I would still do it for sure.

  19. I don't think I have been roller skating since middle school! We used to have school parties at the local rink all the time.

  20. Haven't skated since 1984, when I broke my back. I'm okay but if I ever get on skates my doctor will shoot me. LOL.

  25. We used to go skating at least once a month, usually more when I was a kid and we LOVED it! My husband and I just discovered there is a skating place in our town so we were talking about taking my daughter just yesterday! I definitely want to do this soon! So fun! :)

  26. I haven't been on actual rollerskates since I was a kid. I went ice skating about 3 years ago and I was reminded how much more difficult it is to skate slowly than it is to just go for it and fly along. Its fun, isn't it? Made me wonder why I hadn't done it in so long. And then I worked up a giant sweat and I remembered that I leave the skating rink looking like a giant sweat monster.

  27. Looks like it was fun! I put on roller skates quite often, because I'm a referee for the local roller derby team. Skating parties at the rink are popular around here for kids' birthday parties.

  34. I don't think there is anywhere near me that you can still go skating. We have a few ice rinks in the area, but that's it. I can't remember when I last went roller blading, it had to be early 90s.

  35. We have a rink somwhat close buy. I can't remember the last time I was on a pair of skates. I do have some inline skates but I am terrified of them these days. My bestie played roller derby for the longest time and she always wanted me to play. Maybe someday.

  42. I used to skate all the time when I was in middle school and junior high and high school. I have not skated in years. I would be too scared now. I used to skate with my son, but that has been such a long time. I think skating is a fun activity for the whole family to enjoy, but I do not think I have the guts to go now!

  43. I love roller skates too. And I have played this sport for 2 years

  45. The answer might possibly be to elect to purchase a pair of adjustable pink ice skates. A large amount of ice skates that have been referred to as pink are by and large not fully pink.
