The big day is finally here! Today I am going to show you my laundry room makeover! Woot! Woot! My basement is split in two parts. You come down the stairs and through the door to the left is a nice, finished family room. You go to the right, and nice or finished would not describe how the laundry area used to look. It really was a catch all for seasonal decor, yard sale and thrift boxes, outgrown clothes and toys. It was just a hot mess. Here. Let me show you what it used to look like.
Now you can see why laundry always took so long. Who wants to spend time in that!? My husband wanted to turn it into something a little more usable and decided to kill two birds with one stone. We decided to turn it into a functional laundry room that could also be used as a craft area as well. After 2 1/2 very long months, it's finally done.
Pardon the funky shapes of the images. I used the panoramic mode on my phone to give you a more full picture of the finished results.
So, here's what we did. After ripping out the ugly wood wall in the back, we stacked the washer and dryer for more useable space. We had to completely frame in the entire room, which took A LOT of wood! Added insulation, then the drywall went up. Ceilings went up and lighting went in. Next we laid ceramic floor tile, followed by cabinet installation.
What took a lot of time was the cabinet and door painting! Even though we used our Wagner Paint Sprayer it still took several days to get all the cabinets and doors painted. You can't see from this photo, but under cabinet lighting was also installed. We ended up going with a bronze finish for cabinet and door hardware.
I still need to lay down a strip to separate the carpet from the grout, so I'm not fully done, I suppose :) |
To keep floor space free, we installed a StowAway In-Wall Ironing Board, which is pretty nifty, because there's extra shelving inside to keep more laundry essentials! A metal clothes hanging rod was a much better fit than the rigged up clothes line we had before. To hide the ugly water heater and softener, we added a lightweight folding door.
Behind door #3, we still have an ugly 10 x 10 foot space to stack holiday totes and such, but at least it's hidden from view :) I'll be moving my desk against the blank wall, hanging up some photos, putting down a few rugs, and then calling it a day.
When it's just the 2 of us doing all the work, it was a long drawn out process, and I am taking a break from the home improvement scene for a bit. Jason didn't get the memo and has already jumped into his next project. Rebuilding the deck. Good luck with that, buddy. You'll get no help from the wife there!
So, what do you think of my laundry room makeover? Wanna come over and wash a load or two?
OMG it is so gorgeous! It's prettier than my whole house :) Love the floors, the countertops and the lilac colour! The only thing that I'm not sure about are the strangely positioned backsplash tiles, they're tricky to the eye :)
ReplyDeleteAre we having a party?
Thank you Dezzy :) From the angles I was standing, the tiles didn't photo well, and do look a bit off in the pictures. But in person they actually look pretty fabulous.
ReplyDeleteTheresa!!! I am so excited for you! This is the most gorgeous laundry/craft room I have seen. You guys have some serious talents! You definitely deserve a break. Cheers.
ReplyDeletePS I think I need you at my house!!!! After your break of course.
DeleteTheresa - welcome to the world of, "OMG - I did that and I'm so happy!"
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful, more functional space. I know you love this. The improvements will cut your work time in half, maybe more. You won't be doing the 'search for this and that' routine! I'm so tickled for you! Colors are amazing. I know you'll enjoy this for eons!
Best get 'before' photos of the deck though!!!
I'm amazed at the results - and although it was a long time to do it, it seems fast for how great a result. I'm thinking you could probably enter this into a contest for makeovers and win!! A fun place to do laundry and crafting!
