I'm starting to think I don't have a need for a television in the summer. My yard critters are so good at providing me with entertainment, I find myself captivated by their antics for hours on end.
Last year Momma Bird decided to make herself at home in one of my bird feeders building herself a cozy little nest, so I never got around to actually filling it with seed. Turns out that she loved her little hut so much, she came back again this year for round 2 of hatching her little baby birds.
She did it all on her own last year, so I was quite surprised that she either whipped her man into shape this year or kicked his sorry butt to the curb and finally found a male of worth to watch over her. And watch over her he did! He was on that branch for days on end, never straying far from Mama's side.
Although I was far away on my deck, he was giving me the stink eye, making sure the tone was set not to mess with dad.
Apparently this little birdy here didn't get the memo to stay away or was just itching for trouble because he couldn't resist hanging out on the fence a wee bit too close to Mama Bird.
So, dad did what he does best and opened a can of whoop ass on little birdy.
The show went on for a good 30 minutes until little birdy learned his lesson and flew away. Dad definitely had his work cut out for him! He was vigilant at watching over Mama Bird every day, and in the end was rewarded with 3 sweet little baby birds of his very own.
Who needs staged soap operas when you can tune into the animal soaps every day in your own back yard?
Kudos to all you hard working dads out there! May you be blessed with lots of love this Father's Day!
Ewww them lil' chicks are ugly as hell :) How do you know it's daddy bird, maybe it's a lesbi couple?
ReplyDeleteSuch lovely photos indeed! Hope they're not chirping annoyingly like one of the birds in my yard, she has the most horrible screeching and is doing it all day long. I've sent my cat to hunt it down but he is just playing stupid
They are so ugly they are cute ;) I don't think they are a lesbian couple unless birds have some artificial insemination deal going on like us humans. Thankfully, they don't make a lot of noise, but Jason is ready to dig up the bird feeder and move it way across the yard because Mama Bird's feeding flight path is directly over our deck and she leaves nice little splatters all over it.
Deletethe poop flying squad? We have a squadron of those too, and out of all the street they will often target the knob of out gates, sneeky villains... like one little door knob out of the whole street.... can't be coincidence...
DeleteOh noes! You have to carry sanitizing wipes every time you want to leave the gate! Your birds do sound like they are out to get you!
DeleteI once drove in the parking lot at work and had to avoid a bird that would not move. I took a closer look at a different angle and it was a mama bird standing in front of her baby.
ReplyDeleteHope nobody ran them over later that day!
DeleteWho needs tv indeed. Quite the fight to last that long. He is sure taking it to the other bird too.
ReplyDeleteHe was pretty aggressive. I hauled butt to snap a pic of the babies and got out as fast as I could before he noticed what I was doing. I didn't want to get pecked to death.
DeleteYou captured them very well. I love all the sequence of photos! How cute the story is.
ReplyDeleteOne more thing: We used to have a bird that came back every year to peck on our basement bathroom window. The louder our boom boxes were, the more it would peck away. It was so funny.
ReplyDeleteEither he really liked the music and wanted you to keep turning it up, or he really hated it lol. That's hilarious!
DeleteI really love watching birds, they are so cute and I Love how protective they are of their babies!
ReplyDeleteOh that's funny, what a capture to have!
ReplyDeleteWell you have to admit that little hut keeps the rain off her pretty well.
ReplyDeleteI think that's why she loves it so much!
DeleteOh wow! It's amazing that you were able to capture so much. The only time I ever see robins is when they're hopping around looking for worms.
ReplyDeleteThat is a perfect spot for a nest. I would love to be able to watch the birds like that.
ReplyDeleteThis little story is hysterical.
ReplyDeleteI love that you captured it so well in pictures!
What a sweet incident you witnessed. Glad you were able to capture such a moment through photos.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy watching birds they are so cute. Love the photos
ReplyDeleteEven animals have fatherly instinct. I hope we can learn a lot from them.
ReplyDeleteBirds are one of those cutest. I've owned and taken care of chicks before and I just adore them. I imagine we have the same fervor when it comes to protecting.
ReplyDeleteThat's right! That's what real dads do! They watch the family, and they'll lay a can of whoop ass open on anybody who threatens that. Go Mother Nature!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice tribute to the dads!! Love the pics <3
ReplyDeleteYou did such a great job of documenting your backyard drama! :) I've never seen birds fight like that before. I've heard of a catfight, but never a birdfight! :)
ReplyDeleteThat story was better than most of the crap thats on TV anyway. Those sure are some ugly/cute hatchlings.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching birds with my dad when I was little. How cool that you got this close to them!
ReplyDeleteI love capturing nature when I can! There is nothing quite like seeing animals in action in their natural habitat.
ReplyDeleteI love bird watching, this is amazing! You captured some awesome moments with them, I love how she made that feeder her house, how awesome! Great pics!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great reminder of what protectors dad's are suppose to be. Great Father's Day observance and the little birds are cute!
ReplyDeleteAwe! This is so cute! I love your narrative, especially the can of whoopass part. Great photos too!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool that you can follow along with the excitement in your own backyard! I love it.
