Starting College with a Fresh Face

As most of you know, our daughter Mariah left for college a few weeks ago. As parents, we were a little concerned with how she was going to adjust. She had never been away from home for more than a day or two at a time, and here we were getting ready to push her out of the nest and make her fend for herself for the next 10 months. Naturally we had a few concerns- "Is she going to find her way around campus quickly?" "Is she taking the right classes?" "Will she make friends easily?" But, since Jason and I have been prepping her for this moment for 18 years, we knew in the grand scheme of things that she'd be okay. We were lucky to get to tour the campus several times before shipping her off, so she was able to get a good feel of the place before settling in. By the time she left, she was really excited to start this new chapter in her life.

"What are you most looking forward to about college, Mariah?" When we ask her this, the first thing that she says is, "The clubs!" Her college has a huge variety of clubs the students can join, from Pizza Tasting Clubs, to Harry Potter Clubs, and even a Pet A Puppy Club. These are the three that she is most excited to participate in, not only because they sound totally fun, but because she'll be among other kids her own age who share similar interests with her. Of course, the primary goal of college is to learn, but socializing and interacting with your peers is a huge part of it as well. Mariah couldn't wait to meet new people, so starting college with with a fresh face gave her the confidence she needed to step out of her comfort zone and make new friends.

After her first day on campus, she sent us this text, so it helped ease our concerns about fitting in:

In addition to the clubs, having a dorm room was something else that she was really looking forward to.

I'm a planner, so I started making lists last year of all the dorm room essentials Mariah was going to need to get started off on the right foot. I came up with this printable dorm room checklist to ensure we had everything we needed before we hit the road.

She loved getting to pick out her bedding and room decor, but she was even more excited that she was going to have her own toiletries that her sister couldn't come in and swipe. Putting together her shower caddy was something she couldn't wait to do, so we made a run to Target to pick up Neutrogena® and Clean & Clear® products to ensure she was walking out on campus with a fresh face every day.

Neutrogena Facial Cleanser

Since Mariah wanted to make a good first impression, she immediately headed for the facial care section at Target to load up on Neutrogena® Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub, Neutrogena® Body Clear® Body Wash - Pink Grapefruit, and Clean & Clear® MORNING BURST® Facial Cleanser.

Neutrogena Body Wash
Neutrogena at Target

Mariah chose the Neutrogena® Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub because it contains maximum strength Salicyclic Acid acne-fighting medicine and the pink grapefruit helps to keep the skin from over drying while the exfoliators gently smooth away roughness.

The Neutrogena® Body Clear® Body Wash - Pink Grapefruit is an oil-free acne body wash that helps prevent body acne. The maximum strength Salicyclic Acid boosted by MicroClear® Technology treats body breakouts on the back, chest, and shoulders without over drying. Mariah loves the bubbling action of this body wash!

Clean & Clear® MORNING BURST® Facial Cleanser, a unique gel cleanser with Vitamin C, is a great way to get a morning fresh face. The citrus scent will awaken the senses while the BURSTING BEADS® burst with energy and vitamins, leaving skin fresh and ready to take on the day.

Clean & Clear Face Wash

With the help of Neutrogena® and Clean & Clear®, Mariah feels fresh and confident every day. She's looking forward to putting her best face forward and making her freshman year of college a successful one.

  1. Hehehe count on Jason to ask what's for dinner :)
You won't believe it but I was just buying me a facewash today! Did not know which one to use, I'm currently finishing Bioten's Quince Face Gel, so in the end I opted for Nivea Cleansing Cream Wash which was on a discount. I did see grapefruit Neutrogena but it is extremely pricey here in Europe, I think it was double the price of Nivea, even though Nivea is in the upper middle price range.
Clean And Clear no longer sells here, but it reminds me of their acne face lotion I used as a teen, think it was the first product ever I used on my face.

    1. I'm pretty sure they've talked about the dining court options more than anything else since she started LOL

I think Neutrogena & Nivea run about the same price here, so we go with what smells better and fights acne ;)

  4. Umm, how is her bed up there? I don't see a ladder. Magic? lol Getting to be out on your own and have your own things that siblings can't steal sure is a win. Unless you get stuck with roommates. Ugg to roommates. Never knew there was so many clubs either.

    1. The ladder is at the end of the bed. We had to move her desk under the bed so she could climb up and down. She did get a roommate, but it's one of her good friends from high school. They were able to request a room together, so it worked out really well for her this year.

  5. My daughter LOVES the pink grapefruit face wash!!! Oh man...college essentials - I don't know if I can remember that far back. Ha! I started college 25 years ago (yikes...I'm old!). I honestly can't recall the detailed products from that time, but I do remember shopping with my mom before - getting the necessities, and fun items to dress up the dorm. That was such a fun, scary and exciting time!

    1. It's funny how we forget what we needed back then? I was writing down everything that I thought she could possibly need onto a master list for a full year. She did have an advisor at Notre Dame give her a care package before she left that had a lot of little things in it too that he said would be handy (post it notes, paper clips, hand sanitizer, etc.) I'm sure I would have forgotten to give her half of what was in that bag!

  12. That list is so perfect! It's hard to believe she's away at college. I bet you're missing her. I love her bed!

I'd love the clubs as well. They sound like so much fun! Mica has a few choices of clubs for middle school: Robotics and something else. He didn't want to do either. In one way I'm ok with it. He won't have to stay after school for it. In another way I'm thinking, robotics would be so much fun. Isaak's doing strings, but said, "I'm not trying out for Student Council!" So there's that. Ha!

Room essentials: Crates! I used them for so many things!

    1. Robotics would be so much fun! Maybe he'll change his mind. I think Isaak would be a great leader in student council. He has such a big heart and that's a great quality for a leader!

Crates are a great idea! I saw so many people with them bungee corded to the back of their bikes there. They do make amazing makeshift bike baskets as well.

  15. Times have certainly changed since I went to university in 1967 at the tender age of 17. My parents dropped me off at residence and left saying, "Don't come home on the weekends!" But I went to Acadia, where my parents went, and I had a lifetime of listening to their stories about all the fun of university. How wonderful that your daughter went with good skin products. I remember of pain of having skin blemishes! Mariah is a very good sport in letting you share her adventures on line. My extended family members are very good sports too! Have a good one!

    1. My daughter is over 3 hours away, so she won't be coming home for the weekends. The next time we'll see her will be at Thanksgiving. It's good though that she gets some life experience away from home. I am sure your parents were really excited for you to attend their college :)

  20. I'm glad she's doing well!! She looks happy in the pics. :) It's exciting isn't it?? My daughter took 3 classes instead of 4. She was worried about how she would do, but of course, and hurrah, she's doing fine. :) We love Neutrogena here! Used their products for years!!

    1. Of course she's doing well! I'm sure she inherited her mama's smarts :) Here's wishing her a very successful freshman year! I do wish Mariah would have been a little closer, but Notre Dame was really the only option for close to home and she just didn't have the desire to go there :(
