Do you remember when we used to actually look forward to school lunches? My nieces once said they wanted to be school lunch ladies so they could always have access to school lunch, but that was before it got all unappealing to eat these past few years. There was an old photo going around on Facebook of a lunch lady holding up a huge school pizza, and the consensus was that school pizza was the BEST pizza back in the day. I do agree, school pizza used to be super yum, but what really revved my motor was the apple crisp that was always on the menu in the fall. The gooey apple filling topped with an oatmeal crumble... gahhhh! I couldn't wait to dig in!
Seeing that pizza photo and thinking about my old school lunchtime favorite, I was compelled to buy a big bag of Granny Smith apples at Sam's Club last weekend so I could go home and make my own apple crisp. I didn't have a recipe for it in my own stash, so I did what I always do and turned to Golden Blossom Honey first before searching elsewhere. There I came across this Apple Cranberry Crisp and the hunt for a recipe was immediately settled.
The sweetness from the honey and apples is offset with the tart cranberries, giving this dish a perfect blend of fall flavors wrapped into one drool-worthy dessert. I'm just gonna come right out and admit that I ate several heaping spoonfuls of the crumb topping before popping it in the oven. Yes, it was that good raw. Serve this apple cranberry crisp warm out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and I bet this recipe becomes a new fall favorite for you too. My girls may not be able to have school apple crisp like I enjoyed many years ago, but this is definitely a respectable substitute.
Topping:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats (not instant)
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup butter, chilled and cut into small pieces
Filling:
5 or 6 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch thick slices
1 1/2 cups cranberries
1/2 cup GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

What was your favorite item off the school lunch menu when you were a kid?
Pizza was my fav on the school lunch
ReplyDeleteSeems to be the popular opinion.
DeleteSuch lovely combo of greens and reds!
ReplyDeleteWe never had school lunches LOL most of our schools don't have a kitchen.
We are truly spoiled here. We used to get free McDonalds breakfast sandwiches before our big yearly test even. They wanted our bellies full so we could think better.
DeleteI was lucky if I stole a penny for a bagel from my moma's wallet :) which was once a month at most :(
DeleteHow did you do the last photo, the lighting in it is out of this world! So cozy shiny with the light coming from just the right angle!
I put a table in the corner of my living room between two windows right after the sun went over the house. I thought it gave it a warm effect.
DeleteI love that you can just buy bagels on your way to school. We have no stores or grocers, unless you count the Indian convenience store, within walking distance of the schools. That's one think I loved about Europe is all of the little bakeries there were. We are kings of the super centers here, so bistros and bakeries just don't exist unless you are smack dab in the middle of the city.
The spot between the two windows is my fave in my house too :) That is where my reading armchair is!
DeleteIt's not the same in all of the country, but my own city is made in the way that each part of the city (we call them local community from which every city is made of) has its little super market, a few bread shops, usually a post office and a hairdresser, and we have a small green market too which is being renovated next week, it will get a roof and new stalls, should be fun :) This is usually all within the walking distance from your home, but all bigger shops and supermarkets are in the downtown. We even have a cake shop across the local school, newsstands, pet shop, hardware store and a few butchers. It is all very small, but you can still do your business there. When it comes to most other schools in the city, they often have burger shops around them, bakeries, so kids go there to stuff themselves silly with the unhealthy shit.
I think that would be ideal. Little community shops to cater to the neighborhood. Everyone knows everyone and you probably get better service too.
DeleteI always liked pizza days at school. That day always had a brownie on the menu as well.
ReplyDeleteThis does look good. Perfect for this time of year too!
I should go pick apples. We have plenty of places around here to go do that.
I found a pear bush by my house. I thought I got lucky with free pears, but they were the ones that are hard and sour. Uck!
DeleteMaybe if you let them set longer possibly? My parents had a pear tree. The pears were sour before they were ripe. Otherwise they may taste good in a baked dish.
DeleteI let them sit for 2 weeks, then the fruit flies came. I might go back and see if there are still some on the tree and try again though.
DeleteMy husband loves apple crisp type dishes so I am saving this one.
ReplyDeleteServe it warm over ice cream. Trust me. He'll love it even more that way!
DeleteIf you were the school lunch lady the kids would never ever want to leave. But school lunch and good? Yeah, those two things never went together in any of the schools I went to.
ReplyDeleteMaybe if they just served you chicken all the time, you'd have a different opinion ;)
DeleteI like that it has cranberries in it too!! Pinning this one to make over the weekend when my grandbabe is here with us. :)
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy, Rosey :)
DeleteOooh - this looks good. Will be trying it - been in a recipe rut lately and looking for new ideas. Now that school is in full swing, and both kids are in marching band - there is no free time anymore.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite item from school lunches had to be tater tots. My mom used to send me with lunch to school, and on days that they had tater tots i would trade everything in my lunchbox until I had pretty much nothing but tater tots! LOL! :)
