The end of the school year is quickly approaching. I know some schools are already out for the year, but we still have 2 weeks left before our summer break hits. If your kids are like mine, not only is it going to be hard to leave their friends for the summer, it will be hard to say goodbye to their favorite teacher as well. My girls have had some really wonderful teachers over the years, and because we love those who help shape their future, we always try to have a parting gift for their favorite teachers at the end of the school year.
This year, one of the gifts Leah will be giving to her middle school teacher is the card game Unstable Unicorns.
Unstable Unicorns is a game that we often play on family game night, but we also think it would make for a great addition to the classroom. If there are two things that middle school kids like, it's destruction and unicorns, and you get a lot of both in this game. You'll build up your unicorn army, betray your friends, and wreck havoc on your opponents. It's the ultimate strategy game for kids aged 14+.
You receive 135 game cards and a rule book in the box.
I will say that some of the rules in the rule book were a little unclear, but once we played a few rounds, the game was actually quite simple to understand. The gist of the game is you start your Unicorn Army with 1 baby unicorn. From there, you have to fill your stable with 6-7 more unicorns (depending on number of players in the game) by drawing from the card deck, all the while building a strategy to dodge the other player's moves that are trying to block your game plays and tear down your army. There are some YouTube videos up that help explain how to play the game, but I honestly think you'll catch on by trial and error quite quickly on your own. If you get stuck on your turn, you can reference the black information card to help you through your play.
While this game can be played with a minimum of 2 players, I think it's more fun with 4-8 people, making it the perfect gift for the classroom.
Even if you aren't giving teacher gifts this year, it's the perfect addition to your family game night stash. We always have a snack on game nights here, and the last time we played Unstable Unicorns, I whipped up a batch of Unicorn Popcorn for a fun themed treat.
Simply pop a bag or two of microwave popcorn and set aside to cool. Melt down several different pastel color Wilton candy melts, each in their own bowls. Divide the popcorn into each of the bowls with the melted candies, stir to coat, then spread onto wax paper. Allow to cool. I use 1/4 cup melted candies to 1 cup of popped popcorn. You can also dress up your unicorn popcorn while the candy is still wet. Use different colored sprinkles and star candies to give it a little extra flair.
If you're planning a parting gift for your favorite teacher or simply want to add some excitement to family game night, pop over to Amazon and grab a copy of Unstable Unicorns today!

Such conniving, treacherous unicorns :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun game! Poor teachers probably can't wait to get rid of the kids for the summer.
Speaking of gurls, have you ever wanted to have a baby boy since you have just gurls?
Uh, no. Every time I play with my nephews I tell Jason "Thank God we had girls". They are just too rambunctious for me. Love them to death, but I would have went grayer a lot sooner if I had boys.
DeleteHow fun! I love games so much! I wish Mica liked them more. Isaak loves them. Some people at my school are crazy about unicorns. I had Mica give a teacher a few things this year. Isaak's teacher only got school supplies I got on clearance. Her classroom, or kids can use them. Something a little less personable for a teacher that was difficult. There are way more good teachers than bad teachers out there, so parting gifts is great.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you still gave her something useful. I know Isaak struggled in her class, so it was thoughtful to still gift her something at the end of the year. We are a board game family, but Leah isn't so much. She'll play, but she doesn't get excited about new games like we do.
