Those of you who know me, know that I am a huge Disney fan. And like most Disney fans, I am all kinds of geeked out about the new movies they are bringing to us this year. I took my girls to the theater to see Disney's live-action adventure Dumbo earlier this year and it quickly became my favorite film of 2019 so far. I've been patiently counting down the days that I could add it to my own collection, and if you've been doing the same, I have good news! Dumbo is flying to store shelves today, June 25, 2019, so now you can grab a copy for your collection as well!

Dumbo

About the film:

In "Dumbo," struggling circus owner Max Medici enlists former star Holt Farrier and his children to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive but sinister entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere, who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, spectacular, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland.

The film is directed by Tim Burton, and I admit that while I am a fan of his films, I did wonder if this live-action film was going to mimic some of his darker work. However, this live-action Dumbo is quite tame and not in the least bit dark, scary or morbid, and the separation of Dumbo from his mother was tastefully done without harsh cruelty shown towards the elephants, so it is definitely suitable for viewers young and old alike. There's only one character, V.A. Vandevere, who you love to hate, but you'll find yourself rooting for the rest of the characters from start to end.

Looking forward to seeing Dumbo for yourself? A fun way to get the family excited about its release today is to host a Backyard Circus Celebration.

Dumbo

You just need a few things to make your backyard circus party a real celebration. What we did was set up a little popup circus tent and filled it with blankets and a few snacks.

Dumbo

Be sure to add some fun activities in too by tossing some carnival games into the mix. Horseshoes, bean bag toss, duck pond, and ring toss are all hits with my family. I found a 4-In-1 set at the local party supply store for under $30 that includes everything you need to put together 4 popular carnival games.

Teach your guests how to juggle. You can grab this printable "Learn to Juggle" step-by-step guide HERE.

Circus food is also important, but keeping it simple is key for everyone to have a great time.

Grab a few boxes of frozen pretzels and corn dogs for a quick no fuss meal, then fill up some containers with carnival staples like peanuts, popcorn, animal cookies, bubble gum, cotton candy, suckers, etc., that's easy for little hands to grab and go (or grab and sit. Let's make sure we take precautions to avoid choking).

Once all the kids have worn themselves down with all the fun, it's time to settle in for a viewing of Dumbo.

Dumbo was just released on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital formats, so be sure to fly over to your nearest retailer to get your hands on a copy today!

    1. Honestly, it wasn't horribly sad. We took a known crier with us to the theater and she didn't shed a single tear!

  5. I love all of your party suggestions! We did not see Dumbo in theaters because my son has a hard time sitting through an entire movie, so I love to go all out with a special viewing party when we finally do get to watch it on DVD! Thanks for all the fun ideas!!

    1. I remember those days my little couldn't sit through a movie. Sometimes it's just easier to wait for the dvd and host your own party at home :)

  6. I would actually be very curious to see this movie honestly. I don't remember the dumbo from when I was a kid - so this would be a whole new experience for me I feel like.

    1. Even if you saw Dumbo as a child, this one offers something different from the animated version. I think old and new viewers alike will enjoy this film.

  10. OMG you got a tent from them? How wonderfully charming! Was this for one of your nephews or nieces' birthday?
Disney has just announced that they will do an animated Flash Gordon movie, should be fun, we never get sf animation from them.

    1. Isn't that tent the cutest!? I asked Mariah if she needed it for a safe space when she went back to college, but that just made her mad lol. I just did this little setup for the kids and their friends. Most of our family has winter birthdays, so we don't get to do a lot of outdoor parties here for them sadly :(
I think I heard that about Flash Gordon, Who's playing the lead?

    1. If you loved the original, you're in for a real treat with the live-action version! In my opinion, it's even better than the animated one!

  12. I'd totally watch it if it was in front of me. I liked Dumbo when I was kid. I am excited for the day where Hollywood decides to make all new movies. No sequels, no remakes. It's not that they can't be good. Many are. I'm just ready for more creative content. A movie that makes me say, "Wow!".

My favorite circus snack? I dig peanuts and cotton candy. Those pretzels are good too. I have a recipe to make them. It's been awhile, since I've made them.

    1. I agree with you on the creative front. It does seem like we aren't getting near as many original films as I'd like. There's plenty of story lines in the news every day that could make for good movie making. However, I'm not complaining about Dumbo because I absolutely loved this one!

I've never made homemade pretzels before, but I'd like to try my hand at it sometime.

  25. What a darling idea for a backyard party, Theresa! I adore Dumbo. I bonded with him as a little girl because I was always teased about my big ears, and mean kids called me "Dumbo." Now I think of Arwen Undómiel whenever I see my big ears, but Dumbo will always have a special place in my heart. I loved Crackerjacks during my circus going days.

    1. Cracker Jacks were the best! You must have grown into your ears because they look normal sized to me? I used to get called a pug since I have a weird face. Guess that's why I've grown to love them as an adult.
