Some of you may already know this, but I love Tim Burton, so ever since I first heard that there was a Tim Burton themed restaurant coming to NY (thanks friends who like to tag me in these kinds of things on Facebook!), I've been wanting to go. We arrived just a little after opening, and while we didn't think to make reservations, and because it is super tiny/cramped inside, I was surprised we were able to get seated right away. You can see from the below photo how narrow the space is, and the seating ends right past those stringed lights.
Forgive my photos on this post, but I didn't take my good camera around the city that day, so we are stuck with grainy iPhone snaps.
For Burton fans, the decor of Beetle House will totally suck you in.
Because they offer a wide variety of vegan and vegetarian options, it's the only restaurant I didn't have to hear, "What can mom eat here?" like I did at every other restaurant we stopped at on our vacation.
I'm just going to say that the food is not cheap here, but not out of the realm of food pricing in NYC. You can choose an appetizer and an entree for $40 per person. Add in drinks and our bill for a party of 5 came out to over $350 with tip. I got the Vegan Wonka Wings and Vegan Sweeney Beef Burger.
And the Edward Burgerhands comes with scissors stabbed through the bun.
Also ordered was the Cheshire Mac & Cheese, Franken Fries and non vegan Wonka Wings.
Jason and I ordered a few adult beverages to go with our meal. I got Beetle's Juice (so yum!) and Jason ordered (if memory serves me right) Edward's Lemonade. Both came out bubbling over with smoke (dry ice).
While the drinks were top notch, for the price of the meal, I was not impressed with the food. I've had better tasting vegan options in restaurants that don't offer a full vegan menu, but the rest of the family didn't have any complaints with their non-vegan choices. But, you're paying for the experience, so I was able to overlook it. For our experience, we got to hang out with Edward Scissorhands, who was quite the character. At one point, he ran around with his Jack Skellington mask on and later tried chopping up water bottles and the fake clouds in the sky.
Overall, even with my bland food, I did enjoy our stop at Beetle House very much and would say it is worth a visit, even just for cocktails if you're in NYC or LA. I would suggest making reservations though, as I think we lucked out getting a table when we did as it filled up really quickly soon after we were seated. They do offer a cookbook so you can try their menu items at home. I bought the book so I could make Beetle's Juice at home since it was one of the tastiest drinks I've had in awhile.

NY is my dream, I would love to visit this place, your captures are such a joy to me, thank you so much for sharing!☺
ReplyDeleteI hope you get there Natalia!
DeleteOMG for that kind of monies you can pay two months rent here :) The food does look fugly under that lighting but I guess that is the point in the horror restaurant :) I bet you was a happy little bunny there!
ReplyDeleteI was a happy little bunny, but I was also happy to leave. It was quite cramped in there and I hate tight spaces.
DeleteYou were here and you didn’t come say hi!! Lol. I kid, I kid! I don’t blame you for not being excited, especially after your fabulous Ireland trip! The city seems to be getting dirtier each day. We are supposed to be going for dinner on 10/29 with a corporate leader for doing a great job on the fiscal close last month. Maybe I can convince them to pick this restaurant since it is so close to Halloween after all. I’m definitely not a vegetarian, but I typically opt for those options when I eat out. Something about eating meat from a restaurant really skeeves me. Enjoy the rest of your vacation!
ReplyDeleteI didn't think it felt horribly dirty... after all we didn't see any rats on the streets (only caught one in Central Park and saw one from the window of the subway). I'm more of a nature traveler, not a big city girl. The rest of the family loved it there though, and the hubs would be thrilled to live there if he could.
DeleteYears ago I lost my car in the city. I parked on the street and couldn't remember where I parked it. Long story short, we were out on the streets later than most people and all of a sudden allllllll the rats came out. You wouldn't believe how many of them we saw. It was an eye opener.
DeleteWow, cool find!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteOh my goodness, that looks like so much fun.
ReplyDeleteI think you'd like it there, Mary :)
DeleteStinks when the food turns out bland, but then yeah, was more about the experience. Damn, those prices are high indeed. But that is NY for you. I remember it not being cheap. You not wanting to go somewhere? That's rare. All the smog and dirt and people?
ReplyDeleteHey now... it's not THAT bad. I wouldn't really say smog. It's more like grime, filth, hobos, and lots of rats. Now, if you were talking about the traffic, that would be a different story! I'll never forget your face when you first saw the LIE. I think you thought my bug was going to get squished in those traffic jams. hahahaha
DeleteNew York just never appealed to me. Too many people, too much city walking. It wasn't horrible though, I just prefer nature travel to big city travel.
DeleteMy youngest really wants to go to NYC. We will go. I'm not sure when. I thought maybe Thanksgiving Break, but something else came up. Just as well, it's freezing there in late November. I've never heard of the Beetle House. That is really cool! I think the one thing I'd like to do is visit FAO Scwartz. Toy Stores are almost non-existent these days.
ReplyDeleteI am kicking myself for not going to FAO Scwartz! Jason and I will go back without the kids some day though. I do want to see it at the holidays and there are some stops that he wanted to make without the kids.
DeleteIt looks very fun! Sometimes I wonder if places like that you should just go, for drinks or dessert. Then pop over somewhere else, for food. Their presentation is spot on. I like the razor blade and scissors in the food. Amazing! It's good no one complained. That sounds like a plan to have no one complain about other's picks. Where would I go? I'd have to research. I've never been, and really didn't plan on going to NY.
ReplyDeleteI think drinks and dessert would have been a better route with this place, but we did really enjoy the atmosphere.
Deleteawesome place to have fun....
ReplyDeleteEek, that's a little pricey for my food establishment budget! But, I have to say, it looks like a fun place. I like themed restaurants.
