Unfortunately, we were pitted against the weather gods on Saturday and lost big time. It was cold, windy and raining, making it very unpleasant to be out and about walking around town. To top it off, Facebook isn't great at giving much information about these events they like to shove on your timeline, so we were going into this event blind, just hoping it was going to justify Chicago's exorbitant parking fees and walking around in crappy weather. While this pop-up event may be the bee's knees for some, for me it was a huge let down. Navy Pier's events are usually pretty fantastic, so I had visions of the pier littered with all kinds of cool pumpkins. We walked the entire length and really only found the display that's pictured above, then another slightly larger display in front of the ferris wheel in the little carnival section of the pier.
I did a pano with my phone so you can see the entire display of pumpkin lights:
There were no pumpkin displays inside of the shopping plaza, nor along the water walkways. This was pretty much it. Maybe you can see why I was a bit taken aback that this event kept getting pushed onto my Facebook timeline, but it really didn't make sense to plan a trip to the pier just for the pumpkin lights. However, I was impressed with what was on display because as I've mentioned before, I'm no Edward Scissorhands when it comes to carving up pumpkins. More like Freddy Kruger. Here are a few close ups of the carved pumpkins you'll see on display here:
Poor Allison about blew right off the pier LOL:
Navy Pier Pumpkin Lights is a free pop-up event, so it wasn't a complete loss (unless you count our parking fees). If you're already planning to be in the area, pop over and check it out. If not, I would not plan a trip to the pier just for this event though. It will run through 11/2, so there's still a few more days to catch it if you were wanting to.
Did you carve pumpkins this year?
They grey ones are interesting especially with the orange inside, such a nice colour combo! The freeze came here as well, it's about 10*C outside, and close to zero at night, we are taking all our chrysanthemums to the graveyard today or tomorrow as it is All Saints here, so no need to worry about them freezing anymore! I went to city in shorts and flipflops on Monday, it was close to 30*C and then it was barely 10*C on Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteWow, some pumpkin carving skills there indeed. Looks like a neat spot to stop and see for a little bit, but yeah, can't say I'd make a special trip for just that. Can only look a a couple of displays for so long.
ReplyDeleteI haven't in a long long time.
ReplyDeleteThat does look windy. It is the windy city. I didn't carve one, maybe I still will. I have a white one sitting in the kitchen. I could carve something Thanksgiving like.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that it was a bit of a disappointment. The Facebook recommendations are usually a hit or miss for me. There really is no in between. Sometimes they are lucky enough to come with some comments that you can view through to get an idea of the event. The pumpkin carvings are pretty neat, though! They made for a nice photo opp.
ReplyDeletePity you had to walk through the rain for that but damn, those pumpkin carvings are amazing!
ReplyDeleteAi @ Sakura Haruka
aww...amazing views...love them all (include Allison ...hehehe.)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the photos.
# Happy Halloween
The cost of parking in Chicago is atrocious. And if you're trying to find a meter, it's nearly impossible. I like the pumpkins. Sorry it wasn't more than it enticed. Hope you had a Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteIncredible carving skills they have indeed! Love to see the lion king there :). I do miss Halloween, Theresa
