You'll find lots of little statues and plaques around the area filled with historical knowledge. So, if you don't opt for a guided tour, you can still learn a lot by stopping to read these monuments.
Once we made our way out of the the little neighborhood, we spotted the granite canopy where the famous rock is located. By the time we reached it, there was quite a large tour group crowding around, making it a bit difficult to get a good look.
We eventually made our way to the front of the line for a quick peek and a few photos. I always imagined Plymouth Rock as being a massive rock, so I was quite shocked that is was only a few feet in width and height. Even with it having been broken in half during an attempted move many years ago, I never would have guessed it would be that small.
The whole area of Pilgrim Memorial State Park is quite charming, though it is small, so thankfully we really didn't need a whole lot of time to soak it in. Talking to some of the locals, they did say the best time to visit is in November as it's more decorative and there are festivals to enjoy then. Sadly, we were there in July, so we were a bit early for the festivities, but it was still fun to explore.
We spent about an hour in the park, and even on such a small time limit, I feel like we saw most of what there was to offer to visitors. Unless you want an in-depth tour, an hour or two should be sufficient time to see the important parts of Pilgrim Memorial State Park.
Wishing all of my American readers a Happy Thanksgiving. We'll see you back here on Friday for a recipe for your turkey leftovers :)
So many gorgeous windows and patios! Happy Thanksgiving, hope you have fun tomorrow at the inlaws! And hope there won't be any casualties during Black Friday :)
ReplyDeleteIt is quite amazing how long ago that was.
ReplyDeleteYou got your way? Never would have guessed lol
ReplyDeleteWell that is kinda of anticlimactic with the rock. I expected it was bigger too. Looks like a nice little spot for an hour or so to walk around though.
What a special place to visit. Perfect timing for the post as well!
ReplyDeleteI love that picture of your 3 girls!
Travis always raves about Massachusetts. He's been 3 or 4 times. His Aunt and Uncle used to live there. His sculpture would do well in that area. He's won a few awards by submitting pieces. Here they just want only people or animal sculptures. Kind of boring overall. That's not to say the Chief is boring in this post. It's just that, that's all they want to see here.
I'd love to pay a visit, but it's super far, for us! They say people in the US don't travel as much as people in the UK. We don't have as much time off. I think that's a main reason.
I loved your pictures. Happy Thanksgiving to you too.
ReplyDeleteHow cool that you got to visit such a historic site. I would have wanted to stop too, even if the rock was small. I'd love to visit Boston. There are lots of places right in the area I'd like to see too.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I forgot, I was here to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, but I forgot because I was excited about the rock, lolol! Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteHow incredibly cool!! Boston is one of my favorite cities, but I have never been here. It's such an appropriate time to visit too. Love the pictures, especially the one where you're overlooking the water.
ReplyDeleteI haven't visited this particular spot. Anything to do with the history always intrigued me..
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing these photos, Theresa. All those historic homes make me homesick for Nova Scotia. I've never seen Plymouth Rock, so it was awesome to see it through your eyes.
