For having a mostly foodie blog, I'm going to admit that I have never cooked a turkey myself. It's true that I am in charge of almost every meal that we eat at home because I may or may not get a little snippy over the mess that the family leaves behind when cooking. But when it comes to Thanksgiving turkey, that's one thing that I still need to cross off my to-do list. Jason has cooked the bird every year that we've been together because it's never made its way into our oven. It's either cooked in the smoker or deep fryer, two gadgets that he had to have even though I'm the house chef. But with his purchases, that made him exclusively responsible for turkey duty every year. Fine by me. But with the incredible sales going on this month, I couldn't resist picking up a turkey a few weeks ago and trying my hand at actually roasting one in the conventional oven. Since Jason has his own cooking method down, I needed to find a recipe that even I could handle as a turkey roasting newbie. Since Golden Blossom Honey hasn't failed me yet, I grabbed this Roast Turkey with Herb Rub recipe of theirs and got to work.
I remember my mom waking up before the sun was even out to get Thanksgiving dinner going. Because of that, I always had it in my mind that actually roasting a turkey in the oven was an all day thing. But thinking back on it now, dinner was always on the table right around the start of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I'm sure now that her plan was to have dinner on the table as soon as possible, then have everyone kicked out of the house by early afternoon so she could nap off all her hard work for the rest of the day to be well rested for those early morning Black Friday Sales. It only took me about 30 minutes of prep work to get the turkey ready, then just a few simple hours with minimal basting here and there to have a fully cooked, golden bird ready for the table. Definitely not as hard as I imagined it would be, and I'm pleased to say that my first roasted turkey came through with a passing grade.

Roasted, deep fried, smoked, grilled... how do you usually cook your Thanksgiving turkey?
Poor turkey, I don't know how people can kill, stuff, roast and eat poor little animals! There was a video yesterday on Facebook of a turkey who is in love with the local mailman and follows his trucks throughout the street.
ReplyDeleteI saw that. Was he in love with the mail truck, or what? Very odd for him to be running after the mail truck like that. I did see another one that made me giggle. The delivery man getting run off by the home owner's pet turkey after he dropped off their package on the porch.
DeleteI'll eat it any which way, but I think my uncle typically smokes it. I like a lot of the sides though. I don't take as much turkey as I do everything else.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness Theresa, your turkey came out amazing! I've never cooked a turkey before so you're inspiring me to do this one day. That seasoning sounds delish too.
