I am in love with old, Gothic architecture, so I knew I had to plan a stop to see the cathedral in person. It was one of the first stops I earmarked when planning out our travel itinerary.
St. Colman's is free to tour, but you do need to be mindful that it is a working cathedral, so be respectful if there is a worship service or funeral service being held once you arrive. Thankfully, neither were in place when we arrived, but the interior was going under extensive renovation during our visit. There was a lot of scaffolding and plastic sheets blocking some of the inside beauty, but it was still a sight to behold taking in all of the incredible details it still had to offer. I'll let the photos speak for themselves (which were taken on an iPhone, so the picture quality isn't the best, but you still get the, well, overall picture lol).
St. Colman's looks massive from the outside, but it only took us about 15 minutes to walk through, which included my many stops for photos. The details on the inside are impressive, but I especially love the exterior of the cathedral. Nestled next to the water, it's just a romantic sight to take in.
If you walk around the base of the cathedral, you'll find a wall with hollowed out parts that have framed tablets with religious pictures carved into them. You can have a seat on one of the many bright red benches along this wall. It's a great place for praying or reflecting.
Even if you are not religious, St. Colman's Cathedral really can't be missed if you're going to be in the area. It's really a work of art in itself! Once you've finished with your tour (which is self guided, btw), be sure to check out the rest of Cobh. The sleepy fishing village has many lovely shops and streets to explore, you'll surely get lost in its charm like I did.
Old Gothic churches... yay or nay?
Tres pretty and gorgeous! That massive preaching balcony with steps is a proof how vain the priests are, do they really think their God would look kindly on such wasteful lavishness? It looks more fitted for Elven court LOL
ReplyDeleteIt really does look like it belongs in an elven court!
DeleteIt's a big yaaaaay for me and my family. We really appreciate the incredible works put on those beautiful structures. We have seen and love the one in Montreal, Strasbourg, Milan, Koln and Notre Dame ..and many more for sure are also beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou have been so blessed to tour so many beautiful structures, Indah. I always love traveling through your eyes as I probably will never get to see half the gorgeous places you've been to.
DeleteSure stunning indeed. You'd think a building that size would take longer than 15 mins to look around in, but then a lot of it is open space once inside by the looks of it. They really kept it up well too.
ReplyDeleteIt really was a lot of open space. I'm sure there's more to explore, we just stayed where it was obvious we were welcome to roam free.
DeleteCould you imagine being the artists that worked on this cathedral.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a churchy person, or into politics (I really for the most part dislike most politicians). BUT their buildings are super cool. We try to go to state capitols when we travel.
I agree! Cathedrals, courthouses, capitols... they are all so beautiful! Many of them are so detailed too, I always spend time just looking up at all of the incredible sculptures and art.
DeleteWhat a gorgeous church! The churches that I am used to are pretty bland, but those red benches are eye catching and inviting. Your pictures are also stunning!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jax! Those red benches really do pop, and look even lovelier with all of those potted flowers between then too.
DeleteI'm not religious but the inside of this is just phenomenal.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same, Mary :)
DeleteIt is really stunning!
ReplyDeleteEverything is so grandiose and spectacular. I would have had this on my itinerary too!
ReplyDeleteIt really was! A real treat to be able to explore :)
DeleteBeautiful place, so full of detail.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous cathedral! That lovely wooden roof made me think of Notre Dame in Paris though. If I ever make it to Cobh, I will see this special place for sure. Thanks for sharing, Theresa!
ReplyDeleteIt also reminded me of the opulence of Notre Dame, though not on such a grand scale. Like a little cousin version. Both equally beautiful in their own right, though.
