I know I've been slacking on the blog posts this past month, but I decided to take February to knock off some much needed things on my to-do list that have been piling up. One of those things was making time to have lunch with a longtime girlfriend of mine. We go way back, all the way to middle school, but because adulting sucks, for the past few years we've only been able to keep in touch on Facebook. Our birthdays are a month apart, so when we hit that 40th milestone, I knew we had to get together to celebrate. As we caught up over margaritas, I found myself stealing glances at the sandwich on her plate- a scrumptious looking Monte Cristo. I've never had one myself, and honestly never attempted to make one at home because it just sounds like a fancy sandwich that would be complicated to make. But, she assured me it was actually really easy, she never follows a recipe, and her sons go nuts for them every time it's served for dinner. Unlike my friend, I usually need to have a recipe to follow when attempting something new in the kitchen, so I came home and immediately scoured Golden Blossom Honey to see if they had an easy to follow recipe for a Monte Cristo Sandwich, and sure enough they did!

Monte Cristo

Don't let the fancy sounding name fool you, because this was one of the easiest hot lunches I have ever tossed together for my family. While I don't eat lunch meat myself (gave it up years ago because of IBD issues), Jason and Allison raved about how tasty they were. Hosting a brunch any time soon? Pop this on the menu for an almost effortless main course. Be sure to make extra dipping sauce though, because it will go quick!

Ingredients

Mustard Dipping Sauce:

1/4 cup GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY MUSTARD
1 tablespoon orange juice

Sandwich:
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
4 slices lean deli ham
4 slices smoked turkey
4 slices Swiss cheese
8 slices white or wheat bread
2 tablespoons butter
powdered sugar for garnish, optional

  1. I love the fact that it is done like French toast! I love love love French toast but almost never make it as it uses eggs. When I make it I just used whipped eggs no milk. But why oh why would you put powdered sugar on it??? You must now repent for your cooking sin, deary, God is watching :)

    1. Don't you eat powdered sugar on your French toast? I always do!

    2. Eep!! You MUST put powdered sugar on French toast or it isn’t even French toast... this must be an American thing. I like my French toast with raisins, cinnamon sugar, and frosting.

    3. I agree. It's not French toast without a sprinkling of powdered sugar! I've never put frosting on mine though. Gonna have to try it asap!

  3. I've been craving Panera sandwiches, so bad! I wanted to go there last night, but we were at a gallery opening and they had tons of food! I really won't pass up free food. Boy do these look wonderful! I'd have to make soup with it. Isaak teeth have been hurting so bad, with his extended braces he got put on earlier this week. It's just as bad, as when he got them on.

    1. I'm sorry his mouth is hurting :( Thankfully, Leah hasn't complained too much about hers so far, but we are only 6 months in, so I'm sure she'll have a few painful moments here and there.

  4. That sandwich looks so good and it is something so simple like this that people love. I have got to try that honey mustard which is probably so good on all foods.

    1. I've never seen it on the menu at a restaurant until recently, but I bet my hubby will start ordering it now when we come across it when we go out to eat.

  8. That is great that you got to meet up. Yeah, the adulting life sure ruins such things. How is the 3d printer going?

Easy and tastes good sure are wins.

    1. I got the printer 2 weeks ago and haven't even opened the box yet. We decided we are going to sell our house this spring, so I've been running around the house like crazy getting it ready to go on the market. I definitely want to play with it soon though. I'm itching to see its full potential!

    2. Sell? You moving to one of those spots you wanted to?

    3. No, just downsizing right now. Our house is just too much for the 3 of us. We may put off selling for a little longer now though. We're having a really hard time finding a suitable house to move in to, so we may have to build one ourselves. Idk. Hopefully by June we'll have everything figured out.

  12. I’ve never had a Monte Crisco probably because I’m not a huge fan of sandwiches. Whenever I get a sandwich, I take it apart and each everything separately. Glad that you got together with your long lost friend for your 40th! It’s crazy how life lets everything past by.

    1. I do that with pizza. I pick off all the toppings one by one, then save the crusts for last. It drives Jason nuts LOL!

  14. It has been so long since I have had a monte cristo. I always wondered how to make this especially since I'm not a huge fan of frying foods in grease. Maybe I'll make an exception just to have this sandwich. Yum.
