The English Market is a huge municipal food market in the heart of Cork, Ireland, serving fresh meats, fish, vegetables, bread, olives, cheeses, confections, soaps, and even clothing.
There has been a market present on the lot dating back to 1610, but the current building dates back to the 18th century. However, extensive damage was done to the market during a fire in 1980, but the new design stuck close to the original design so not much was changed during renovations.
The market is huge, with so many food offerings, we ended up circling it twice before deciding on what to eat. We each ended up going to separate booths since we all wanted something different, then ended up taking it on the road with us as there weren't many seats available to just sit and eat.
There are 4 different entrances to the English Market, so it's fairly easy to access. It was one of my favorite places to stop for food during our Ireland travels (the pastries are really good... not Paris good, but close!) If you have certain dietary needs, you'll have no problem finding something delicious that you can eat at the English Market. Carve out an hour or two for breakfast or lunch, then if you can find open seating, sit and people watch for a bit. A trip to the market really does make for a lovely afternoon in Ireland.
Where's your favorite farmer's type market located?
Wow, looks and sounds like a one stop shop. With four entrances sounds bigger than any I've been to. Over 400 years in business is sure a feat too. But yeah...that fish doesn't look like anything I'd want to eat lol
ReplyDeleteThat fish is a little freaky looking. They had pigs heads on display too, but didn't want to upset any tummies by posting those photos.
DeleteYeah, I'm with Pat. That fish would not be going home with us any time soon. ;) Still cool to come across it in the market. Not so sure I'd feel the same about the piggy head, ew.
DeleteI love markets like this!
ReplyDeleteMe too, but sadly we don't have any close to where I live :(
DeleteGorgeous photos with all them produce! I've ordered some amaranth and it did not arrive as they was out of stock, but they did send me some powdered moringa and honey with cocoa, cinammon and cordiceps shroom (it's good for da heart).
ReplyDeleteWhy is their croissants so damn expensive? And them fruit shaped sweets look lovely!
I don't know why they were expensive, but they were tasty! They do cost a bit more than we sell them for here, but they taste much better.
DeleteThat's lovely that they did send you something to make up for what they didn't have in stock ♥
Oh, noes, that wasn't from them, I ordered that as well myself :) They did not send me shit to make up for the missing goods :) Our custom service and PR here is very bad in all possible shops and companies, we are not a very polite nation, sadly, which is why everybody around the world hates us :) When I had those malfunctioning ovens sent to my house this winter I haven't heard a single SORRY from anyone from the shop, service, company....
DeleteOh my goodness. I love the market pictures. The vegan choice made me smile! I eat all plants so that was funny to me.
ReplyDeleteThose little vegan candies were so cute!
DeleteVery fun!
DeleteIt is nice to see all those fruits in vats (first picture)
ReplyDeleteAren't they lovely!?
DeleteSuch a nice place! *.*
ReplyDeleteIt really was :)
DeleteThat looks like a little piece of heaven in one market!! I've never been to a real farmer's market, but this looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteHave you been to Chelsea Market in NY? I loved it there last summer!
DeleteIn Cleveland, we have the West Side Market, which is phenomenal. I'm drooling over the olives and pastries in your photos. Stopping by from Jax's place!
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to make a trip there when this virus is over. We live in Indiana, so a road trip will definitely be in order!
DeleteAbsolutely beautiful Theresa !!take care !
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gloria :)
DeleteI am very happy to visit this article ..., I like being invited to walk around seeing many corners of the market.
ReplyDeleteAll neat and interesting views.
Greetings from Indonesia
I loved this, Theresa! You captured the market beautifully. I've seen markets like this on several continents, and each has been unique and fascinating. The possibilities for photos seem endless. My favorite? Perhaps the canal boats in Venice in a floating farmers market. I hope you are all doing well!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful way to display food. After all this COVID-19 has been lifted I wish we'd do away with plastic bags. I see so many all over parks.
ReplyDeleteThose are great pictures. We love to visit that kind of place too. I had to do a double take for the picture that has the cheese sign. The hanging item looks a lot like a very large updo for the lady's hair. I laughed when my eyes adjusted to what it really was... :)
