Laser Cut Welcome Signs

Back in February I thought it would be a grand idea to purchase a laser cutter. You would think that while we were all quarantined that would have been the best way to spend my free time, learning how to use the thing. Apparently I had other plans because it sat in the box untouched for months. And by months, I mean that I only started tinkering with it in August. It's been a learning process on how it works, a lot of frustration for someone who isn't very skilled in this department, but I'm getting there. I've made a few things for family and friends, mostly cutting boards and these welcome signs for their front porches.

The first sign was inspired by The Haunted Mansion. This is Jason's favorite ride at Disney, and while I had intentions on selling this one at a craft fair this fall, I think I might end up keeping it for myself to use around Halloween.

I did make myself a Jack Skellington, Nightmare Before Christmas inspired welcome sign for my own front porch. While it's probably considered a Halloween porch sign, if you know me, you know Jack's my man. So, I'll more than likely end up leaving this one up year round.

My best friend told me to surprise her when it came to her birthday gift. She told me that she either wanted a Jack, Mickey Mouse or Aladdin welcome sign. I wanted a challenge, so I went with Aladdin.

I know from my pictures it looks like these are painted, but I assure you, I have zero talent when it comes to art. I purchased all of the cut files on Etsy, then bought the wood and spray paint from my local hardware store, then cut and painted the pieces before gluing it all down with Stick Fast CA Adhesive.

I ended up making my other best friend a different Nightmare Before Christmas welcome sign since I didn't love how small Jack's head was on the one I made for myself. I also popped his dog Zero at the top for a little something extra. The board to the far right pictured below was a request from my aunt, a die hard Notre Dame fan.

I'll be making a few of these signs to sell at the craft fair this weekend, but I have a few other things in the works right now and am planning on opening my Etsy shop with some of my laser cut wares sometime next week. So, be on the lookout for that soon! I'll be offering giveaways from my shop a little closer to the holidays since I'm really excited to share with you all what's kept me away from the blog a lot these past few months. Keep those eyes peeled!

Characters, sports, seasonal decor... What design would you want on your porch welcome sign?

  1. How does it look like, deary, is it computerized? Can you cut somebody with it? :) Not that we would want to, just asking for a friend... As you know, I'd rather put KINDLY EFF OFF sign in front of my doors than WELCOME ones, or DON'T RING THE BELL IS ALWAYS (DELIBERATELY) BROKEN and such polite things us posh Brits say.

    1. It cuts through about 1/4 inch of wood, so I'm sure you could cut people with it too if you could fit them inside the machine LOL. If I get any good at it, I shall make you a feck off door sign to keep all the gross people away ;)

  2. Well, those are neat! I’ve just started noticing similar Welcome Signs on front porches in our neighborhood. I figured it was people who were bored during Covid looking for stuff to buy online! Maybe they are crafters, too. I think any holiday one would be fun to have.

    1. Thank you! Yes, those signs seem to be popping up everywhere these days. Even my mom painted a few for her friends LOL. I might do a Grinch one for Christmas.

  7. How cool are all these signs written. The shape of the letters is also unique. Inspired me to put it up in front of my house too.

Thank you for your inspiration, Theresa.

  8. You really did a fabulous job with these and I can't wait for the Etsy shop to open. I've been eyeing your work since you posted the Mickey & Mickey spoons on Facebook. I would be most interested in seasonal signs.

  9. They sure turned out great indeed. Got a laser and a 3d printer. Going right to town. Have you used the latter yet?

I'd have to have something with a little more snark than welcome lol but it would probably be cat related. Or maybe dog too. "If stepping in my dog's crap wasn't enough for you, I'll spell it out. Get Lost!" lol
