Office Renovation Reveal

A few of you here and on Instagram have asked about our current moving status, so I thought I'd give a little update. I had fully expected to have our house sold and the new house well under way being built by now, but when we first started making those plans, we had no idea how bad Covid-19 was going to affect not only us, but the entire world. We faced many challenges last year and ended up having to take a step back and reevaluate our plans going forward. We had to take a good, hard look at where we were with our house plans, professional/work plans, and family plans and ultimately decided that we should stay in our current home for 1 more year until Allison graduates high school as that will open up many more options on where we can buy land since we will no longer be limited to not only this school district, but Indiana as well. Hopefully by then Covid will be a distant memory because I am itching to snap up some acreage and get my little farm started. Highland cows, alpacas, and maybe a few piggies are definitely in my future!

With that decided, we figured we'd finish up working on this house so when the time does come to put it on the market, it will hopefully attract more potential buyers. We've had a spare room that's served many purposes over the years. Technically we can't market it as a 4th bedroom since there is no closet, but over the years it has been a bedroom, a gaming/entertainment room for the girls, and a workout room until Jason decided to turn a quarter of my basement into a home gym. That left the bonus room as a catchall for storage, but since I've started my own business, we decided it would be the perfect room to turn into a home office.

We had to patch up some dings and holes in the drywall and Jason ended up drawing out plans for wainscoting before I could snap a few pics. The ugly mud color walls was the paint the previous owners had painted this room 15 years ago that we never bothered to change out. And how about that fugly light that produced hardly any light in this room at all. If it weren't for the big windows, we'd be walking around blind in here most of the time.

The wood on the upper half of the wall was built and used, I believe, as a loft bed. However, we've always just used it for storage. The little door next to that heavy ladder is the attic and has always been a pain in the ass to get to.

Since this was going to be my space, I wanted to go with a farmhouse vibe. First, we ripped up the carpet and continued the flow of bamboo flooring that we have been laying throughout the rest of the house. The ceilings in this room span 40-50 feet in height, but after a minor panic attack climbing the ladder, I painted the upper half of the walls in a custom blend of green. If you go to the Heirloom Traditions Paint website, I had Lowe's color match their Irish Garden color. 

Next, Jason trimmed out the walls by building his own custom wainscoting, which I painted in bright white. The entrance door is new, but was installed a few months back. We replaced all of our 2nd floor rooms with 5 panel doors, so this flowed with my farmhouse vibe well. We added in extra outlets, but I forgot to put the covers on the one on the left wall before snapping a pic. 

I wanted THIS (affiliate) lighting fixture from Amazon, but Jason was able to build me something similar for half the cost. I also had him build me 4 matching wall sconces for the walls. 

The loft bed area we were going to mess with later, but I figured a cheap and quick solution would be to box the area in with shiplap. We pulled a few of the boards off of the loft bed frame and installed an attic stair kit so we wouldn't have to mess with a heavy ladder to reach the area. Jason then framed it in with a handmade panel that drops down, then we can pull the stairs down to reach the top. Also, those beams on the ceiling, Jason hand made and installed to give the room more decoration and tie everything together.

 

My desk is now against this far wall, I did add a gray area rug, and I'll be moving my plants onto the top ledge above the sliding glass door to complete the look. I still have a little caulking to do, otherwise, this is another home renovation project that's a wrap!

Even though this is currently an office, I think for future owners it would make a lovely yoga room, a great place for photography with the natural lighting, or it could easily be converted into a luxury bathroom. The possibilities are endless!
