Mardi Gras doesn't technically start until next week, but I have really been enjoying the photos on social media of the celebrations going on in NOLA right now. It's been a year since we've been down that way, and Jason and I thought about taking a road trip that way since he wasn't able to come with me last year. But last week started my season of traveling for work for the next few months, so sadly it's not in the cards this time. I've been knee deep in hunting for good Mardi Gras recipes lately, and next week I'm going to try making king cake and jambalaya. However, this week it was all about the gumbo. If you recall, we were so looking forward to trying authentic gumbo in NOLA, but were sorely disappointed when we took a bite and thought it tasted like old lady perfume. I had good luck with a gumbo recipe we found on Golden Blossom Honey last year, so I thought I'd try another one of their recipes this time around and went with Seafood Gumbo

Besides salmon, shrimp is about the only other seafood that I will try a few times a year, so this recipe was one that I was willing to give a try without hesitation. Having a good veggie dicer made quick work of getting this gumbo prepped and into the pot. Once it was all done, we were quite relieved to find that we all enjoyed this gumbo much better than what we had in NOLA. No perfume flavor here! Jason's only complaint was he wanted sausage added to his, but we can adjust the recipe next time to make it a little heartier to satisfy him.

Ingredients

1 pound medium shrimp shelled, reserving shells
1 bay leaf
8 cups water
1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 tablespoons flour
1 cup onion, chopped
1 large green bell pepper, chopped
1/2 cup celery, chopped
1/2 cup long-grain white rice
1 (14 ounce) can diced tomatoes, drained
1 1/2 cups jumbo lump crab meat
2 tablespoons GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
2 bunches scallions, white part only, thinly sliced
cayenne pepper to taste

  1. I don’t think I’ve ever had it, at least authentic. It looks good, but now my spouse can’t have anything with canned tomatoes, so that eliminates a ton of recipes.

He did get a king cake through work last week and I got the baby!

  2. How do you do the travelling, deary? Are you out for days, touring a certain part of the state and sleeping in hotels? How is that gypsy life going on for you LOL?

    1. I like the gypsy life. I leave on Friday afternoon and do a show either in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana or Illinois for the weekend. It's usually 8 hours on Saturday and 5 hours on a Sunday. Sometimes the venue is within driving distance, so if it's less than a 2 hour drive there, I sleep at home. Otherwise, I live out of hotels on the weekends.

  3. A few years back we went to this restaurant in Easton, PA. I think it was called The Bayou. I was sooo excited to try the gumbo, until I took the first bite. It was super spicy. Luckily, my husband was willing to trade plates with me. That being said, I'd skip the cayenne pepper and try his recipe any day!

    1. This was not spicy, thankfully. What we had in NOLA wasn't spicy either. There must be many different versions of gumbo to try, I'm assuming.

    1. That's surprising seeing how you live in the southern part of the country. Might have to go find a vegetarian version sometime.

    1. Taking the Etsy on the road. Actually, I made 5x as much at the craft fairs as I do on Etsy, so travel craft fairs are a very lucrative business.

  7. That's too bad you don't get to go to NOLA together. Enjoy your travel season for work though. I hope it is very profitable. Your recipe, as usual, looks amazing.

  10. Travis made some for Christmas Eve dinner. Sadly the boys weren't impressed. We thought they'd love it. We should have made what we usually do. I like it though.

  11. I don't like seafood so I like the idea of trying this with sausages! I think it would be really yummy :)

Hope that your week is going well! The flood waters have gone down here so we are no longer flooded in which is awesome :)
