With all of the traveling we've been doing in the south, along with Mardi Gras this coming Tuesday, I've had Louisiana on the brain a lot lately. More specifically, their cuisine. As a child of the south, I was raised on sweet tea and soul food, something that Indiana just can't get right. I will admit that Louisiana is a mixed bag when it comes to eats. If you want Cajun, stick to the country. If you want Creole, the city is where it's at. Two similar but different in their own right cuisines, I'm more of a Creole fan but there's a place for both of them on my palate. We thought that we were going back to Mardi Gras this year, but plans fell through. As bummed as I was we couldn't make it work, I decided to console myself with some homemade Creole Shrimp Over Rice for dinner this week. This is a Golden Blossom Honey recipe that brings a taste of Louisiana right to your kitchen without having to suffer the heat and humidity of the south to get it.

This recipe has a wide array of southern flavors all piled into one spectacular pan. Spice is the life of the south and this dish brings plenty of it. If you're a fan of the heat, you're going to love this. If maybe you don't like heat in large doses, that's ok. You can decrease the amount of red pepper flakes or omit them altogether and still have a meal that is worthy of southern praise. I'm not much of a seafood eater, but I'll say that all of my ladylike manners flew out the window during dinner as I exclaimed loudly mid-bite: "I'd for sure make this again!" Then I could almost hear my grandma's threat of a whoopin' if I talked with food in my mouth again LOL! And honestly, this recipe would have made that whoopin' worth it.

Ingredients

1 pound fresh shrimp, peeled, de-veined and cut into thirds

3 tablespoons butter
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 cup onions, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 cloves garlic, pressed
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 tablespoon GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
2 teaspoons paprika
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
salt to taste

Do you like recipes that pack a little heat in them?

  1. My oldest and his girl just came back from a few days in New Orleans. The first time for them both. My son is like his mother, lol, and wasn't fond of the city. His girl however, loved it. They spent $2500 on food (she's a foodie, loves to sample the best of the best). I keep thinking I'll go back someday and give the city another shot. Maybe during Mardis Gras.

    1. Every time I see a pothole, I think of you and your explanation on NOLA's Texas sized pot holes. I always say, "well, least it isn't Texas sized" when I see one LOL. I want to go back and try more cuisine, too. I imagine she got a really good taste of the city on that budget! You may have to have her guest post so we know what to eat next time we go!

  2. I do like spicy foods, but my husband can’t take even the tiniest bit of spice because he has a condition called Barrett’s esophagus. It’s difficult with recipes sometimes to make mild Mexican food, etc.

    1. It stinks when our bodies just don't tolerate things, doesn't it? I feel like the older I get, the less I'm able to tolerate heavy spice. Between the two of you having dietary restrictions, I imagine it took some time to get a working menu down that doesn't mess either of you up during mealtime.

  3. No, we don't do heat, unless it is the bedroom heath lol
What is sweet tea, deary? I've heard about it before, but forgot....

    1. It's just heavily sugared tea. Normally I don't do sweet tea anymore because of health reasons, but I did get me a peach sweet tea in Kentucky as a treat and just wanted to cry at how delicious it was. I do drink a peach flavored green tea here occasionally, but mostly it's unsweet black tea for this gal anymore.

    2. Oy, how can you drink unsweetened black tea? It's like bitter swamp water LOL I put sweetener in mine morning tea, and honey in the afternoon one.

  4. Can't say I'm a fan of heat in food. That stinks that you didn't get to go again this year. But hey, can't travel everywhere. Unless you win the lottery. Then maybe you can lol

    1. If only I played the lotto LOL. There's always next year. My dog isn't doing too well these days and it just isn't worth it to put the added travel stress on him this year :(

  5. I'm a fan of creole food, too! I guess maybe I'm glad that you say that northerners can't make a proper sweet tea, because whenever I've tried it - which has never been in the south - I alway come away wondering why anyone would drink it. Obviously, I've never had it done right.

    1. You must try it at least once in your lift. Get to Alabama, Georgia, or Tennessee for the best of the best sweet tea sometime. I insist!
