Burgers, brats, potato salad, watermelon.... are you sticking with traditional backyard barbecue eats this Independence Day? We'll be working on the 4th, so sadly we've had to pass on the invites to gather with family and friends this year. If we were free though, I think I would have changed things up a bit this year and mixed some old favorites with some new, classier pairings. I always love to have an assortment of dips and spreads on hand when hosting gatherings for my loved ones because even though things like burgers and hot dogs are the main dish, people tend to enjoy snacking before the main course is served. And they return to the snacks again even after bellies are full because snacking while socializing just go hand in hand. Since I always have avocados stocked in our home, I probably would have skipped slicing them up for a burger topping and used them in this Avocado Salmon Hors d'oeuvres recipe from Golden Blossom Honey.

You know I love me some easy recipes and this is another one that I'm happy to have tucked into my stash. With just a few simple ingredients, you can class up a party by blending up this spread and tossing some crackers onto a serving platter. Easy, peasy. Avocados are one of those fickle little foods that have such a short window to eat before they go bad. So if you ever find yourself on the verge of having to toss one, whip out this recipe and breathe new life into your little avocado buddy. This spread will keep in an airtight container for a few days, so it's perfect not only for gatherings, but snacking on your own.

Ingredients

1 avocado, very ripe

1 (7 3/4 ounce can) salmon, drained and skin removed

1 Tablespoon lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY

1 Tablespoon mayonnaise

2 teaspoons onion, grated

4 drops liquid pepper sauce

salt to taste

Are you sticking with the basic picnic foods this 4th or will you be adding something new to the mix this year?

  1. Yes, dips are great before a party. Real crowd pleasers. I think I've mentioned it before (probably more than once), my oldest grandbabe is an avocado nut. She's loved avocados since she was big enough to know what they were and she still loves them today. Salmon is her second favorite thing. So... you know this is going on my Pinerest to make when they were come to visit. Not officially celebrating the 4th over here either this year (I might go catch the fireworks, we'll see), but Happy Independence Day just the same!

    1. Grandbabe has developed some healthy and amazing eating habits. Her skin is going to be glowing by the time she's a teen! I hope you and the family had a happy 4th!

  2. That is such a gorgeous photo, deary! I have never had me either salmon nor avocado! I have made egg roulade today using rice flower instead of the regular one and it turns out it is possible, cannot wait for lunch!

    1. I love avocado. We eat them several times a week. They are horrible for ripeness though. You only have a small window where they aren't under or overripe. Like 2 days at most it seems.
      How was your egg roulade?

  3. Middle Child has commented that we never do hot dogs and sliders anymore (because I don’t eat them!) so we might have that for the 4th. Have not even made any plans yet because my son and DIL are hosting a couples baby shower for themselves tomorrow so that’s been on my mind.

    1. We don't do hot dogs either. I get Allison one from Costco though when we get their pizza because she doesn't like their pizza, so that holds her off on complaining that I don't make them at home LOL.
Hope the baby shower was a success!
